About me

Josh LaMar has been involved with music for most of his life. He began as a singer in a children’s choir at the age of 8. He played clarinet and violin early on as well, before deciding to teach himself to play the piano at age 13. This led to piano lessons for several years and eventually a BA in Music Composition from Westmont College. Josh has been composing since he was 14. While at Westmont, Josh also studied voice and choral and instrumental conducting.

Josh was brought up in a Lutheran Church in Fresno, CA and has had various music positions in many different denominations. He joined the Disciples of Christ in 2001 at Ventura First Christian Church.

After graduating with degrees in Music Composition and English Poetry, Josh moved up to Seattle and joined All Pilgrim’s Christian Church, where he conducted the choir for a year before moving over to Queen Anne Christian Church, where he was Music Director from 2003-2007. Josh also sings with The Esoterics under the direction of Eric Banks.

Musical Interests include 20th Century choral music, soprano solo, harp and piano literature. His favorite composers are Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Arvo Paert, Eric Whitacre, John Tavener, Henryk Gorecki, Carl Orff and Zbigniew Preisner.
